Better in many cases, I feel, to simply reorder the list to avoid the ambiguity e.g. "my favourite people in the World are Meryl Streep, Ringo Starr and my parents."

Макс Лядецький says
No that sentence doesn’t mean, that you descent from entertainment royalty. For that meaning there should be a column, because that is a list.
My parents: Meryl Streep and Ringo Star

I just heard John Dean mention this comma on CNN. The lady in the video's first comments about despicable people was the same as John Deans comments, and about the necessity for the argument for and against said Oxford Comma. Mind blown!
The Monist says
If you need the "Oxford comma" to indicate that Meryl Streep and Ringo Starr are not your parents, then it's not an "Oxford comma"–it's just a comma.
anika meher says
Those who love Oxford comma and then what she said? I didn’t get those words. Please help me.
Ana Beatriz Fuly says
Simple and efficient. 👏
Ogola Cogoler says
It’s upon the student or writer to decide whether or not to use the oxford comma. However, the usage also depends on the writing style you choose to adopt. Since the word "and" is a conjunction, it is appropriate to use the Oxford comma before it just so as to join the independent clauses. This makes the usage just precautionary, anyway.

Great video but I have to say this, I really think this is a US stubbornness thing, that stops correcting the English language.
Am British, majority of countries stop using the oxford commas a long time ago. Hell, even oxford university dropped the serial comma 8 years ago.
The arguement for using serial comma works both way, meaning serial commas can cause confusion in writing aswell. So it's best never learned and avoided.
I have a Chinese student who's Learning English at university, studying in Australia, The Australia system tells people not to use Oxford commas. she loss some marks because of this, as she learned her basic English for a US teacher.

I didn't know that the Oxford comma had it's own name. I've always used it (I'm not a native English speaker) as I thought it was common practice to avoid ambiguity. Thank you for the fun explanation!

I have never heard the term "Oxford comma" before, I just thought that English allowed you to use a comma before the "and". But wasn't your second example a case for a colon? If you wanted to say that your parents were indeed Meryll Streep and Ringo Starr, wouldn't you write it "… my parents: Meryll Streep and Ringo Starr"
