TOEFL Test – Shi’s Experience

Shi just took the TOEFL test in the test center and got a very high score. She talks about her experience and her TOEFL preparation.

1) What are you doing and where are you from?
I am from the Philippines. I am currently doing nothing so preparing for the TOEFL for a week was alright.

2) When did you take the TOEFL and why did you take it?
I took the TOEFL on March 14 because I want to study abroad and the TOEFL was one of the requirements of the university.

3) What was your TOEFL test center experience like?
The test center was alright, they were pretty prepared regarding the pandemic. Only three people were allowed to take the TOEFL test at the same time.

4) Did you have to wear a mask?
Yes, it was a must that we wore the mask the whole time during the TOEFL. It did not bother at all. During TOEFL Speaking it also did not bother much. I had to adjust the voice on the headphones before starting the TOEFL Speaking task.

5) How did you prepare to get a high TOEFL score?
I was not really expecting a high TOEFL score. I studied for a week. I relied on the schedule that you talked about in one of your videos. On one day I would do this task, the next day I would do another task.

6) Which TOEFL task was the easiest for you?
The easiest task was TOEFL Listening because I listened attentively and I took some notes which was totally sufficient.

7) Was there a task in the TOEFL that you found rather hard?
Apart from TOEFL Writing I found TOEFL Reading hard. It is the first task in the TOEFL test. You must be in the mood and put yourself in exam mode. The passages were hard, I sometimes had no idea what they were talking about. You have to be calm and just read.

8) Why was TOEFL Writing not so easy for you?
Writing had always been a weakness of mine and I knew that. So I needed some advice. I watched your videos about the TOEFL Templates. They really helped a lot regarding the writing tasks. Your template was my base for writing. I did not have to waste time thinking about how to structure my writing. That helped a lot.

9) How did you feel immediately after the TOEFL?
I thought: “Oh I messed up my Speaking task”. I got a little bit too nervous, especially because I could hear the other test-takers talking. But in the end I got a good TOEFL Speaking score.

10) How long did you have to wait for your TOEFL scores?
I had to wait for 6 days.
