TOEFL Independent Writing – Multiple Choice Essay:
1) The Integrated Writing Task
In the integrated writing task in TOEFL Writing you first have to read an article and after that you listen to a lecture. In the article the writer presents his arguments with regard to a specific topic. In the lecture the lecturer directly opposes the writer’s arguments by stating counterarguments. In the ETS practice test you cannot listen to the lecture, you have to read it. Your task is to write an integrated essay that explains each argument of the writer and each counterargument of the lecturer.
2) How to Take Notes: The Table Strategy
Before you start writing the integrated essay, you should first take notes. Write down the most important points and organize them in a table. This helps you write the integrated essay later because the arguments are well-structured. If your integrated writing task is well-structured, your TOEFL Writing score will improve considerably!
3) Writing the Introduction
In the introduction of the integrated writing task you must first state what the article and the lecture are about. They deal with the same topic, thus you only need to write down that topic. Second, you must state what the writer’s and the lecturer’s points of view are. They are directly opposed, so make sure you make that clear. In the video I explain how you can do that.
4) Writing Body Paragraph 1
In the first paragraph of the integrated writing task in the TOEFL you should explain the writer’s first argument and the lecturer’s first counterargument. Make sure that you write at least two sentences for each argument. In the integrated writing task you must show ETS that you are able to write an essay in English. You must show that you have a broad range of vocabulary, that you know English grammar, and that you can present the arguments of the writer and the lecturer. Use a variety of words in your integrated essay, paraphrase information whenever possible, and explain the arguments of the writer and the lecturer correctly.
5) Writing Body Paragraph 2
In the second paragraph of the integrated writing task in the TOEFL you should explain the writer’s second argument and the lecturer’s second counterargument. Make sure that you write at least two sentences regarding each argument. It is important that you use different words, do not use the same words that you used in the first paragraph. Use synonyms, in particular when you talk about what the writer or lecturer says. Have a look at my essay and my TOEFL Writing template for the integrated writing task to see how you can do this.
6) Writing Body Paragraph 3
In the third paragraph of the integrated writing task in the TOEFL you should explain the author’s third argument and the lecturer’s third counterargument. Write at least two sentences for each argument. Remember to use a broad range of vocabulary to express what the writer and the lecturer say and use different linking words. You should regard this paragraph as your last chance to show ETS that you deserve a high score in the integrated writing task.
7) Score Booster
These are my tips to boost your integrated writing score. First, make sure that your essay is well-structured. Use a table to structure your integrated writing. Second, use a lot of different linking words. Third, paraphrase the information given in the article and in the lecture whenever this is possible.

Hey Juva, the video is awesome, yet I have a question. Clearly, time is limited to read passages and to listen to records. Thus, I thought paraphrasing when writing essays would be easier. Why do you think paraphrasing when noting down is better than doing it later? Thx in advance :),,

I CAN NOT understand one thing, Reading passage and lecture are opposite always. my question is , (The lecture cast doubt on the main point ) is there any possibility to come in exam ( that passage cast doubt ). ? is it fixed always lecturer has to doubt ??? I need to careful or blindly write to follow the template ( the lecture cast doubt), no possibility to come passage where author from reading passage has doubt ??
