I'm not a fluent English speaker and I feel ashamed about it not because of this english but our so called judgmental society. English isn't any skill it's just a language but still people consider it as a big achievement like if you don't know English that means the person is illitrate. I try really very hard to speak English in front of my friends, teachers and of course in any important meeting. These things always bother me and I feel my confidence level is declining in a tremendous way. I know that English is important for any job interviews or any such things but what if a person has complete knowledge about his/her course but he/she gets rejected just because of not fluent English!

Exactly what I tell my students! If they watch with subtitles, it becomes a reading exercise, rather than a listening exercise. So what do i do? We watch very short films during the lessons, (up to 5 minutes) and I give them about 10-12 words from the video. As they listen, they have to put the words in the order they hear them. It's not easy, but over time, they "train" their ears in a similar way in which other people train their muscles.
It takes time but it's absolutely worth it.
Also, full-length movies are much too long and can be tiring. So I go for short films or videos of interest (there are plenty available)… something that they can watch over and over because they're short. Podcasts are also good, but films have one great advantage: you can see the actions and the expressions of the speakers. Students gradually learn to connect what they hear with what they see – similar to the way a baby learns to connect the words it hears with the actions it sees..

Thanks for creating such a beneficial video! I've been struggling with listening for years just like you and after watching your video , I just realized I've been doing it wrong the whole time! (Actually, I don't like watching movies that much but most people recommended watching movies with subtitles so I kept doing as they said) No wonder my listening skill improved just a little bit.

You have to use subtitles until you know the meaning of the words…do that for 1-2 months…then go without subtitles…another 1-2 months..then go again an close your eyes…that if you want 4-12 months learning process, if you want to be faster well, you just need more contact with the language per day…

salem hamrah says
oh that's right , when im reading subtitle I cant listen what the actor is saying . however some films are really hard to listen what they are speaking and their accent is too bad.
