SỞ HỮU CÁCH CỦA DANH TỪ

• Với danh từ số nhiều không tận cùng bằng “s”, thêm ‘s:

1. The men’s room = The room of the men
2. The children’s voices = The voices of the children

• Có thể dùng dạng ‘s mà không có danh từ theo sau:

It isn’t my book. It’s my brother’s (My brother’s book)

• Để chỉ sự vật, ý tưởng, ta dùng of:

The roof of the garage (Không dùng the garage’s roof)

• Dùng Of với Beginning/ end/ top/ bottom/ front/ back/ middle/ side…

1. The back of the car
2. The beginning of the month

• Có thể dúng ‘s hoặc of với danh từ chỉ một tổ chức.

1. The government’s decision hoặc The decision of the government
2. The company’s success hoặc The success of the company

• Có thể dùng ‘s để chỉ nơi chốn

1. The city’s new theater
2. Italy’s largest city

• Có thể dùng ‘s hoặc ‘ với các khoảng thời gian:

1. We have got a week’s holiday
2. I live near the station. It’s only about ten minutes’ walk.

• Đôi khi chúng ta có thể gặp cả ‘s lẫn of trong cùng 1 câu.

We saw a play of Shaw’s (We saw one of Shaw’s plays)

• Liên kết giữa 2 hoặc 3 danh từ, sử dụng ‘s hoặc of

1. The mother/Ann
2. The top/ The page
3. The newspaper/ yesterday
4. The name/ this street
5. The garden/ our neighbors

• Với danh từ số ít, thêm ‘s:

1. The boy’s book = The book of the boy
2. Tom’s house = The house of Tom

• Với danh từ số nhiều tận cùng bằng S, thêm ‘:

The boys’ house = The house of the boys

• Có thể dùng ‘s sau một nhóm có 2 danh từ trở lên:

Jane and Jill ‘s wedding

• Có thể dùng ‘s đối với cụm từ chỉ thời gian:

Have you still got yesterday’s newpaper?
